Question: Netscape Messenger crashes when I try to delete a message. How can I fix this?

Answer: Try deleting all the Trash.* files in your Users\ folders.

Background: Every time we tried to delete a message from our InBox, Netscape Messenger would crash. After serious experimentation, the following process finally resolved the issue:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and locate your Users folder, typically found in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users.

  2. Right-click the Users folder and then choose Find from the shortcut menu that appears.

  3. Find all Files named Trash.*.

  4. When the search is complete, press Ctrl+A to select the found files and then press Delete. Confirm the delete when prompted by choosing Yes.

  5. Restart Communicator; this recreates the Trash folder and resolves the problem.

We're not sure why our Trash folder got corrupted; however, until it was re-created, the crashes occurred repeatedly. Please note that ScanDisk did not detect the file as corrupted, so it's not a cross-link chain issue.

If you're having similar problems with other folders, you may need to delete and re-create them as well.
