Question: I'm trying to install WordPerfect Suite 8, but it keeps telling me that Windows Messaging is out of date and needs to be reinstalled. I've tried to do this, but Corel's installation program keeps displaying this message. How do I fix this?

Answer: Corel's web site offers a number of possible solutions to this problem. In our experience, one only seems to work. Specifically:

  1. Install the Windows Messaging update.

  2. Reboot or restart your computer.

  3. Start the Windows Messaging update again. When presented with the following screen, choose Remove All.

    The Windows Messaging Setup dialog

  4. When the Windows Messaging is removed, reboot.

  5. Start the Windows Messaging update and then install it.

  6. Reboot.

At this point, you should be able to install the rest of the suite (or one of its components) normally.

According to the information in Corel's KnowledgeBase, this only affects those using Windows 98 and ME.

You may find it easier to update Windows Messaging before trying to install WordPerfect Suite 8. To do this, run the EXUPDUSA.EXE program found in the \Corel\Suite8\AppMan\Setup\WinMess directory of Disc 1. We understand, however, that not all versions of Suite 8 included this as a separate installation file. If you cannot find EXUPDUSA.EXE on your installation CDs, you can obtain a copy from Microsoft. As of this writing, details can be found here. (If that link is invalid by the time you read this, search Microsoft's web site support site for Document ID 177854.)

What is Windows Messaging?

Windows Messaging System (WMS) adds e-mail capabilities to Windows 9.x computers, such as the Microsoft Exchange InBox. It installs the Simple Mail API (MAPI) and provides related services for Microsoft's Collaboration Data Objects (CDO). Application developers can obtain a license to redistribute WMS to their customers. Full details can be found here (Microsoft Document ID Q192917). More information about these services can be found on Microsoft's MSDN web site.
