Question: Windows displays an error when I put an audio CD in my CD-ROM drive. How do I correct it?

Summary: Edit the command associated with the AudioCD key in your Windows Registry.

Background: On certain machines running Windows 95 OS/2, we noticed the following error appear when attempting to play music CD's:

Error Message: "Windows cannot find play.exe"

We used the following process to correct the problem.

  1. Determine the location of the CD Player.

    1. Right-click the Start button.

    2. Choose Explore from Here.

    3. Use the Explorer window to locate and select the CD Player shortcut.

    4. Right-click the shortcut.

    5. Choose Properties.

    6. Select the Shortcut tab.

    7. Copy the value in Target to the Clipboard.

    8. Cancel the Properties dialog.

  2. Modify the command associated with audio CD's in the Windows Registry.

    1. From the Start menu, choose Run.

    2. Type regedit and then choose OK (or press Enter).

    3. When the Registry Editor appears, choose Edit | Find (or press Ctrl+F).

    4. Type AudioCD and then press Enter. This should take you to the registry key associated with audio CD's on your copy of Windows. On our system, this was:

      My Computer\HKEY_ROOT_CLASSES\AudioCD

    5. Expand the settings for this key (by clicking on the plus sign) until command is selected.

    6. The settings panel now shows a (Default) value, presumably set to play. Double click (Default).

    7. When the Edit String dialog box appears, use Ctrl+V to paste in the location of the CD Player you saved earlier.

    8. Choose OK and then close the Registry Editor.

  3. Insert (or re-insert) your music CD. When you do this, the CD Player appears.

Note: As a precaution, you should always backup your Windows Registry before changing it.
